I will often read posts, mostly made by MMA fans about how REAL it is. Now I have several friends who have competed professionally (I am not going to name drop here), who are coaches for fighters, all tell the same story. MMA is not real street fighting.
First understand, that very few people want to be MMA fighters. There are a 1000+ times more fans than fighters, but these are usually the people who are most confused by the SPORT. Very few people really enjoy getting punched in the head :)
In an attack on the street there are no rules, and contrary to what the Gracies preached for many years most fights do not go to the ground. When they do, someone is seriously injured (stabbed, shot etc). When 2 drunks in a bar fight, the Gracies theory is true. If you don't believe me, head to south Chicago and pick a fight. While you are bleeding on the ground, your attacker is not going to get on top on you!
Skills needed for real attackers and for sport are completely different. If a guy has a knife and you try to do the SHOOT and take him to the ground you are going to die.
