An Ounce of Prevention

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I heard my mother say this over and over again as I was growing up. Why don't we believe it or ever follow it? What am I referring to here? Self Defense.

Now I am a martial arts teacher by trade and have taught hundreds of self defense workshops and classes outside of the normal martial arts / karate program, but it is a hard sell.

Why? These simple words - "It will never happen to me". The sad truth is that statistically, if you are reading this, the odds are it will. Violent crime, be it from a stranger, friend or acquaintance is on the rise. With the current economic situation it is going to get worse and worse long before it gets better. What can you do about it? Unfortunately most people simply revert back to the original phrase - "It will never happen to me".

Prevention is a hard sell, period. People worry about illness after they are sick. (Just look at cigarette sales). Over the years I have done many public workshops teaching simple and effective techniques to help you defend yourself in a bad situation. The response has never been great. These workshops are endorsed by local radio, which helps, but I have never seen a huge turnout like I would expect. We have also tried different price points from FREE to $100 and the results were always the same.

My suggestion to readers. Get some friends together and approach a local martial arts professional who specializes in self defense training. (not a sport or MMA club). Most will do this as a public service as we do, or charge a small fee for the service. Check out our self defense website for some tips on keeping safe also. Feel free to email me with any questions.
